Rhetorical Analysis on an Alcohol Advertisment

The advertisement here is clearly trying to persuade its on lookers to purchase their alcohol. They are most defiantly using pathos in this advertisement. They use and attractive women in a flash outfit to convince male on lookers that it is a suitable drink for them. I think by putting her in a martini glass, it somewhat symbolizes a sense of cuteness. I think this appeals to the female audience. The author of this advertisement is obviously three olives vodka. The audience for this piece would be any consumers of alcohol. This picture has a sense of classiness to it, so I think it also appeals to those who want to consume an alcohol of higher class. The purpose of this advertisement is to persuade its on lookers to want to drink this beverage. Once again by using this clever picture of an attractive women the martini class, its attracting both men and women.

I think Animal Rights needs to be made stronger in the US. Now I am not arguing that they should have the same rights has humans for instance, I just think their rights need to be more humane. First of all I think animals should be treated with full respect. I don’t think they deserve to be hit or tortured in any manner. Recently, on Mar 11, 2008 Cullman County sanitation employees took care of several injured puppies that were found severely beaten and covered in blood, and in a dog food bag in front of a residence garbage pickup (The Cullman Times). If this were a case involving human babies it would have been handled more seriously. There would be teams of police force looking for the criminal that committed this crime. Considering, how this incident was involving only animals a report was filed by the Sheriff and the puppies were just nursed to health. There was no further investigation on who committed this act leaving the criminal free to injuring more innocent animals. I also find it very inhuman to eat animals. I understand that people may argue that they were put on earth for us to eat them, but what makes us as people any different. It is against the law for humans to eat other humans. Also, you don’t commonly see people going around eating cats and dogs because they have feelings, well so do cows, chickens, pigs and even fish. Animal testing is also another huge matter that needs to be addressed. People who have new products tested on them are compensated for their bodies, but animals have no choice. Scientists constantly use animals as test subjects giving the innocent creature no choice. If the product is faulty or dangerous, it could result in death for the animal. Could you ever see a scientist doing that to a human? In general, I think Animal Rights needs to be perfected in the United States, giving animals a safe and beneficial life.

Gay Marriage Should Be Legal In The US

I think that gay marriages should be legal in every state across the US. America, is said to be a free country, but by restricting a person on who they are allowed to marry, its taking away from that freedom. By making gay marriage legal it would ensure that all citizens enjoy full human rights. I personally don’t understand how allowing to people of the same sex to be legally bonded together, could cause harm to our country. Its a choice made by two individuals that should have no affect on the people around them. All though people may argue that by allowing gay marriages in the US it would be breaking all the traditional values and traditional forms of family life. But, right now America seems to be all about change, I mean for the first time ever we have an African American man running for the President of our country. If America is about change right now, they should be more excepting of gay marriages. I also think that if gay marriages were legalized they should receive the same celebration and benefits that all married couples receive. They should receive all employee benefits being offered to people with domestic partners. I personally think that the reason gay marriages have been illegal for such a long time, is because people in America are too scared to open up to change and except something new. I think if the values of loving everyone for the person that they are not matter what, was taught to people early in life, people in this country would become a lot more excepting to a plethora of matters including gay marriages.

Synthsis Idea Propsal :)

For my synthesis paper I would like to pick apart the story, The Allegory of The Cave and synthesize it with the song I Can See Clearly Now by Johnny Nash. Although both very different purposed they do surprisingly share some common similarities. The Allegory of The Cave is simply about prisoners being contained in a cave. They know nothing about the world outside of their cave, they can see shadows of objects projected on the cave walls in front of them, and since knowing nothing else they believe what they see is reality. One day a prisoner become free of the cave and is liberated to see the outside world. He then becomes enlightened seeing that the world outside is much different than the silhouettes he was introduced to on the walls of the cave. The song I Can See Clearly Now could have different meanings to different people. Johnny Nash basically talks about how a person has overcome pain and suffering and obstacles in their life, and there now able to see clearly. To me this song and relate to the story The Allegory of The Cave in two ways. For one these people are chained into a cave, I feel that they would experience some kind of suffering or confusion, maybe frustration to understand, that what they see on the walls could be reality. Then when the prisoner who is able to free himself out of the cave, he gets through the pain and suffering, he can “see clearly now”, he is free from all costs and is able to experience the outside world for himself without holding back.

Synthesizing Joy

Joy is defined by the dictionary as being the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation; but to me and Kristin its something much more.

“I believe that joy is your own personal feeling of happiness, only you yourself know what joy feels like to you.” Myself

“Joy, to me, is doing something that makes me happy.” Kristin

Kristin + Myself = “ Joy is a very internal feeling, it is something that you do for your own personal sentiment.”

Joy...?

When I hear the word joy i instantly think of bliss. I believe that joy is your own personal feeling of happiness, only you yourself know what joy feels like to you. Joy is what makes you feel good and only you are able to know what that is. I think joy is a very personal feeling, but is easily displayed publicly by smiling, laughter or just being in a whimsical mood.

Reality TV... Allegory of The Cave

In the dictionary the word allegory is defined as a representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms; figurative treatment of one subject under the guise of another. To my understanding this means a person believes what they are shown. In Plato’s The Allegory of The Cave, the prisoners have never seen outside their cave; but they are shown silhouettes of different objects on the cave walls and they are told that the shadow specifically is that object, the prisoners of course believe this not knowing anything else. I think in today’s society there are many representations of allegory happening right before our eyes. The biggest example that I could think of is reality TV. Every night millions of satisfied people tune their TVs to their favorite reality TV shows; sitting their soaking up every bit of action and drama preformed by the people on the show. One of the most popular reality TV shows I can think of is the Real World. The show consists of seven complete strangers thrown together in a house to live and work together. The show is filled with romances, affairs, fights and of course tons of drama, it keeps the viewers hooked. But why is this allegory? Well it is simple, as the viewers sit there and watch this so called reality TV show, they believe that everything they are seeing is real; I mean it is reality TV. For all we know these people could be professional actors; maybe not even actors, they could be real people, but they could be reading off of a script. And how are we supposed to even know if the show is really taking place where they say it is, one season they were supposedly living in Australia, but we would never have known if it really took place in California. Allegory is convincing us of something we are not completely sure of, like the prisoners in the cave believed what they were being shown was actual, we believe all the drama on reality TV shows is real.

A Turn On Gender Roles

A woman carrying a man, something I know I thought that I would never see. This picture is a perfect example of defying sterotypical gender roles. As the public knows, it is always common to see men carrying women around; you see superheroes carrying women in distress out of danger, you see grooms always picking up their new brides, it has always just been, men carrying women. This picture defies that role. It shows the women somewhat fierce and strong, kind of saying “I can do this” or “I don’t need you to pick me up”. Then we have the man who has kind of a feminine look to his face, like “Oh how nice”. This picture is basically saying women can do it. Women can be just as strong as men. I like how this picture contradicts the typical gender role. I know I personally am a firm believer of equality. I believe that women can do almost anything that a man can do, if not the same, maybe even better. Gender roles are a bit degrading for me, being a woman and all. Like for instance the show Desperate House Wives, what is that? Its basically showing young girls that they are going to grow up to serve a man, and then get bored with it and become pernicious. I feel that it degrades women completely, like why don’t any of them have successful jobs and are humble and honest to their spouses. The show is also a great example of gender roles because the husband is out working, while the woman is a house wife. The picture displayed at the top, of the woman carrying the man, entirely contradicts the sterotypical gender roles and that’s why I loved it.

Smoking Please

The picture shown here has Joe Chemo, Camel Cigarettes’ mascot. It shows him very ill and connected to an IV. He looks depressed. The author of this advertisement is obviously a health promoter, trying to influence the public or community to not smoke, showing that it makes you ill. Many anti-smoking campaigns show repulsive images to basically scare the public from the use of cigarettes. The audience to this advertisement is clearly the public, focusing most on those who are smokers, and will be able to recognize the Joe Chemo mascot. I want to also say that maybe it is supposed to somewhat appeal to a younger audience, only because I personally think that Camel uses Joe Chemo to somewhat entice a younger audience to their product. The purpose of this article is to show the negative affects cigarettes can have on a person. It is to convince the public to not smoke or even to quit if they have started. The advertisement was made to help promote health and protect the community of the dangers of cigarettes.

In this ad uses mostly pathos appeal. It almost makes its audience feel sympathy for the ill Camel shown in the picture. It also can also make the public feel a sense of fear, the fear of smoking and becoming ill. This picture can also ignite some anger, in some of the audience members who are smokers and who completely disagree, with that fact that smoking could possibly make you sick. It also adds some humor, i mean seeing the spokes person for an actual cigarette brand deathly ill, is almost ironically funny. Although pathos is almost the center point for this ad, it does somewhat ironically use ethos and logos. It uses ethos in the fact that at the bottom of the ad it says, that the surgeon general warns that smoking is a frequent cause of wasted potential and frequent regret. So it is somewhat giving the surgeon general credit to this ad It uses logo in a way by using Camel's mascot as their mascot for their campaign as well. All in all in some way of form all 3 appeals were used in this advertisement.

Shitty First Drafts.

Anne Lamott's essay had a pretty good hold on my very own writing style. Whenever I right a first draft of anything I basically think onto paper. Every thought, run on sentence, made up and misspelled word ends up scribbled in sloppy handwriting on my "shitty first draft". I feel that rough drafts are much needed when writing anything, and this isn’t because there could be many mistakes and all work needs to be revised, but I feel you can almost express yourself more. With a rough draft there are absolutely no limitations what so ever, because no one is going to see it and it’s your very own. I mean if people saw what some of my rough drafts looked like, I’m almost positive they would think I’m crazy. By having these "shitty rough drafts" it allows you to get anything and everything you might think of down onto paper before you forget your last thought. I know there has been many of times where I have had the most amazing idea and then I somehow manage to instantaneously forget it. Revision is key to my writing style. It’s actually kind of cool to see, sometimes as I revise and begin to type my final draft I get even more brilliant ideas for my paper. Sometimes my final draft is even almost completely different than my rough draft. But all in all Anne Lammott's idea of the “shitty first draft" is an almost essential technique for myself and basically anyone writing a paper. A "shitty first draft" is not only a tool, but a secretly weapon for any writer.
